Dying
It's said that the only things certain are death and taxes. In Ultima Online, death is certain (or very close to it), but fortunately it's not permanent. When your character is killed in the game, you will become a ghost. As a ghost you can be resurrected without any loss to your statistics or skills by finding a healer, a shrine, or even powerful player's that have the ability to ressurect.. Being Dead As a ghost, you leave most of your worldly possessions where you died and wander as a spirit in search of resurrection. Blessed items like spell books, practice weapons and starting equipment will be with you when you resurrect, as well as any item you have insured (see "Item Insurance" below). When your ghostly character gets to a shrine, a healer or a sufficiently powerful mage, you can be restored to life. Note that while Shrines and healers will automatically resurrect any ghost in their immediate area, a player has to know you're there, and it's his own choice whether to help or not. Shrines do you no good if you are a murderer. Shrines restore any other characters, but not murderers. There are rumors of a so-called “Chaos Shrine” at an unknown location, where murderers are raised, and you may be able to find healers willing to ressurect a murder if you look long enough. While you're dead you can pass invisibly, or you can "manifest" so that others can see you. Your ghostly character is invisible if you're in Peace mode and visible in War mode. A ghost can pass through doors and certain other objects, but not through solid walls. If you try to communicate while in spirit form, anything you try to say appears to the living as inarticulate wailing, unless your skill in Spirit Speak is at 100. Characters who possess the Spirit Speak skill can try to understand your moans. Ghosts cannot directly affect the physical world in any way. They cannot use any skills or attacks. They can use a boat while manifested to seek help. Manifested ghosts do sometimes frighten NPCs. Healers Healers can resurrect you when you die. Most wear brown robes and you can find them in Healer shops in town. When you enter, they will ask you if you wish to be healed or if you want to remain a ghost. Take your pick. If you are a criminal or a murderer, however, the healer may refuse to help you. When you’re a new player you can also use healers to heal your non-fatal injuries. Wandering Healers Some healers wander the countryside, performing their good deeds in the manner of the more settled healers. Shrines You can find Shrines near most cities and towns. If you enter a Shine as a ghost you will be given the option to ressurect there. Recovering Your Possessions (And Others') Once alive again, you may try to hurry back to reclaim any possessions that were not blessed or insured, which will remain on your corpse until it decays or is looted. Corpses can be looted under the following circumstances: On Trammel
Only a player with looting rights is able to open a corpse on Trammel. On Felluca
Item Insurance For 600 gold (per each item you wish to insure), your equipment can be insured against death. When you die, all of your insured items remain with your ghost. When you return to life, your insured items will return with you. Each time you die, you will need to renew the insurance on your items. Stackable items will not be able to be insured. The cost of insuring your items is taken out of your bank account the moment you choose the option to insure an item. Auto Insurance Players also have the option of auto-insuring their items upon death, by opening the Context Sensitive Menu (single left-click by default) on their avatar. you can then choose to have all of your items auto-insured, so that you don't have to re-insure each item when you die. With auto-insurance, any item that you had previously insured will be re-insured upon resurrection (assuming you have the funds). It's important to note that when your items are auto-insured, gold is taken out of your bank account upon death. This is because when you die, the auto-insurance system kicks in and re-insures your items. PvP and Insurance If you are killed in PvP combat, your "auto renew item insurance" will be charged at a reduced rate, which will be one half of the normal pricing (300gp per item). Also, one-half of whatever you paid to insure your items will go into the bank box of the person who struck the killing blow. This is true whether you have auto insure turned on or not. |
