ANIMAL
TAMING
“What is that monster blocking the front door?”
“It’s a dragon. It followed me home. Can I keep it?”
To tame a beast to accept you as master requires patience, nerve and a
power of will. The rewards of studying Animal Taming are considered by
some to be well worth the time invested.

Using Animal Taming
To attempt to train an animal or monster to accept you as master:
Stand close to the animal or monster you wish to tame.
Click the blue gem next to the skill on your skill list.
Target the animal you wish to tame.
Remain close to the creature until the taming process is complete (a short time).
If successful, the animal or monster accepts you as master.
If you hide, or come under the effect of the invisibility spell while using the taming skill, you will automatically become visible.
Except in the case of paralysis, if an animal cannot path-find to the person trying to tame it, the taming attempt will fail. This limitation includes situations where placed objects, walls, energy fields, and any other such objects block the creature.
An animal cannot be tamed while it is being damaged in combat or by any other means. It is concentrating on what's hurting it and won't pay any attention to your words. Additionally, you must maintain a line of sight with the creature you are taming or the taming process is aborted.
Pets will suffer 10% skill loss the first time they are tamed, but have full potential for training. In other words, if you release a pet, it will not receive skill loss if you or another person tames it again.
Pets will also suffer an additional 4% skill loss if they are paralyzed during the taming process. While this means additional training time to get your pet back up to its full potential, it may be safer for some of the more dangerous creatures.
When a player logs out, followers (pets, hired NPCs) will be auto-stabled, returning to the player upon login.
- Pets that do not automatically return to the player can be claimed at the stable master.
- Pack animals carrying items will not be auto-stabled - they will remain in the world and be subject to death and/or loyalty decay
Interacting with Tamed Animals
Before you start commanding your new pet, you’ll want to establish a strong
bond with it. A newly tamed pet may have only a tenuous bond with you. To
improve this, you must improve upon the pet’s loyalty to you. You may measure
a pet’s loyalty and discover its general mood by using the Animal
Lore skill.
This skill gives you important clues to making your pet
happy, including information on its preferred food, as well as the creature's
skills and stats. To feed a pet, drag and drop food onto the pet. You’ll
also need to decide on a name for your new pet before giving it commands.
To name it, left-click the creature and drag your cursor to open the pet’s
character window. Left-click on the current pet name (such as, “a dragon”)
in the character window. You may then backspace over the current name to
replace it with your chosen pet name. Once you have established the loyalty
of your pet and provided it with a name, you may begin commanding your pet.
In some cases, you may give all your nearby pets orders by prefacing your
commands with the word “all.”
| Command |
Can be used with “All" |
Result |
| Follow |
Yes |
The pet follows the person you target. It will not attack anything, even if it is attacked. You may target yourself or use the command “Follow me” to prompt your pet to follow you. |
| Come |
Yes |
The pet should come. It will not attack anything, even if it is attacked. (If the pet cannot pathfind to its owner, it will not become passive.) |
| Friend |
No |
The pet treats the targeted player as another owner, obeying his/her commands. |
| Guard |
Yes |
Commands the pet to guard you. Pets will only guard their owners. Up to 5 pets may be commanded to guard a person at a time; pets in the stable count towards this limit.
|
| Kill, Attack |
No |
The pet attacks the creature or person you target. Depending on the toughness of the target and the pet’s loyalty to you, it may refuse to attack.Be wary using this command as you are responsible for the actions of your pet. If you command your pet to kill another player, you may be flagged as a criminal. |
| Release |
Yes |
Releases the pet into the wilds. Be wary of releasing aggressive pets this way, as they may attack you upon release! |
| Stay |
Yes |
The pet will stay where it is currently, and will not attack anything, even if it is attacked. |
| Stop |
Yes |
The pet stops any current actions, such as guarding or following. The pet will also stop attacking. It will not attack anything, even if it is attacked, and may wander. |
| Transfer |
No |
Transfers ownership of the pet to another player. See Transferring Pets for additional information on pet transfers. |
Transferring Pets
Once a pet has been tamed, you may transfer ownership of the pet to another player. Certain requirements must be met for the transfer to be successful:
The pet must feel sufficient loyalty to both the old owner and the new owner to agree to the command.
The current pet owner must be able to perform beneficial acts on the new owner.
The new pet owner must have a high enough Animal Taming skill to control the pet.
“Young” players may not transfer pets to older players and vice versa.
Summoned creatures may not be transferred.
If these requirements are met, the pet transfer is successful and the pet responds to its new owner.
To attempt to transfer a pet to another player:
Speak the words, “[pet name] Transfer.”
Target the person to whom you wish to transfer ownership.
A trade window appears. The trade window contains a horse graphic with
the pet’s name in the current owner’s portion of the trade window. The graphic will match the hue of the actual pet. The
new owner may place gold or other items into his portion of the window.
Both participants must click the agreement gems to trade.
If the transfer is cancelled, the deed deletes itself and all other items
are returned to their original owner.
Note: You must be able to perform beneficial acts on a player in order
to transfer a pet to that player. If, for example, you are in a guild,
you may not transfer a pet to a member of the rival guild.
The pet continues to remember any previous owners for the rest of its
life. Should the pet ever go wild, a previous owner always succeeds in
re-taming the pet. However, the more previous owners a pet has, the more
difficult it is for a non-owner to tame it.
Mounts
Horses, llamas, ostards, ridgebacks, swamp dragons, unicorns, nightmares, and ki-rin are special
types of pets. They provide another method of transportation in Britannia.
Be sure that you are not in "war-mode" or you will attack the mount instead
of riding it. You will appear astride it and your normal walking/running
movement will control that of your mount.
All
mounts can become tired and run out of Stamina. Should this happen, you
need to dismount from the animal and wait for it to rest, or feed it.
Mounts who lose all loyalty buck off their masters.
When you wish to dismount, simply double-click the mount again, and you
will appear standing beside the animal. Note that you must dismount in order
to feed your mount.
You can also be knocked from your mount by another player using a special
weapon called a bola.
Pack Animals
Certain horses and llamas can be bought, and certain types of beetles can be tamed, to act as beasts of burden. Pack animals can
extend the amount of weight you can safely carry and allow easier transportation
of your hard earned goods. Remember, pack animals cannot be stabled if they have items in their packs, so remember to unload them before you log off!
Pet Limit
You will only be able to control a number of pets based on your pet control
slots. Every player has 5 pet control slots. Most pets only require 1
slot, with the following exceptions:
2 control slots: hirelings, fire steeds, unicorns, ki-rin, nightmares,
drakes, and imps
3 controls slots: white wyrms, dragons, and golems
Summoned Creatures
2 control slots: air and earth elementals
3 control slots: water elementals
4 control slots: fire elementals
5 control slots: daemons
You must have the required control slots available for your mount. Ethereal
mounts will require 1 control slot as well. This means that if
you go hunting with a dragon (3 control slots) and a drake (2 control slots),
you'll have to go on foot.
Pet Bonding
After a real-time week of ownership, pets may bond with their owner. If
the animal requires more than 29.1 minimum skill to tame, you must have
the minimum skill to tame it before it will bond with you. Examples of
animals with 29.1 or lower are horses, ostards, dogs, cats, pack horses,
etc.
- Bonded pets will recall with you.
- Bonded pets will turn into pet ghosts when they die.
- Instead of [tame], a [bonded] tag will display above a bonded pet.
- A bond is only broken if the pet goes wild or is released.
Pet Resurrection
When a bonded pet dies, it turns into a "pet ghost." This ghost can still
obey the movement commands (follow, come, etc.). The pet ghost will not
dissipate or lose loyalty, and cannot be stabled.
Any player can attempt to resurrect the pet with bandages if they have
at least 80 Veterinary and 80 Animal Lore. The pet owner or a friend of
the pet must be nearby to confirm they want the pet to be resurrected.
Resurrected pets suffer skill loss, but pets resurrected by their owner
receive less of a skill penalty.
Pet Training
Pet will learn skills at an accelerated rate compared to players, although
they do not use GGS (Guaranteed Gain System).
All creatures, including pets, will have a faster Mana regeneration rate
if they have the Meditation skill. Just like players, they will be able
to gain in Meditation when they regain Mana.
All pets will be able to gain skill in Anatomy, Resist Spells, Tactics,
and Wrestling through combat. Spellcasting pets will be able to gain Magery
and Evaluate Intelligence through casting spells in combat. The maximum
for any trained stat is 125.
A pet's swing speed is equivalent to a human using the Wrestling skill, with a base speed of 2.5 seconds.
Pets with Natural Poison will automatically learn the Poisoning skill
through combat. The Poisoning skill is used to determine how often they
inject poison. Pets with 99.0 or greater Poisoning skill will sometimes
inject a poison 1 level more potent than their normal level. The chance
to poison is given an additional boost at 100.0 Poisoning.
Pack Instincts
If you have at least 2 pets with the same pack instinct under your control,
each of those pets gets a bonus to their damage, including spell damage. Use Animal Lore to determine
what pack instincts your pet has. Some typical pack instincts are: Arachnid,
Canine, Feline, and Ostard.

Stables
If you leave the game with a pet out in the open or in your house, the
pet shortly returns to its wild state. If you wish to keep your pets for
longer than a single game session, you need to stable them. Stables are
found in several towns throughout Britannia. To stable a pet, walk up
to an animal handler and say, "stable" or choose that option from the NPC's context menu. To claim the pet, walk up to the
same animal handler and use the "claim" option. You can claim all of your pets by saying "claim", or you can claim a specific pet by
saying "claim" followed by the pet’s name.
Stable Slots
All characters are allowed to store 2 pets with an NPC Stablemaster. In
order to stable more, your total combine skill in Animal Taming, Veterinary,
and Animal Lore will need to be a certain amount.
