EXPLORING
In general, cities are a safe place to be, even for a weak and inexperienced character. There are usually no monsters and no wild animals running loose in a city. Most NPCs (non-player characters, i.e., characters controlled by the computer) are friendly, and the few that aren’t will not react violently except under extreme provocation. The world of Britannia is divided into two separate territories – Felucca, the PvP enhanced area, and Trammel, the PvP consent area. When exploring each of these territories, you should always keep in mind the ‘rules’ for the territory you are in. Felucca is an enhanced PvP area, meaning that other players may attack you, and you them. You do, however, have some protection. If another player attacks anyone (player or NPC) in a city, the guards may be summoned and the miscreant will be dealt with accordingly. In Felucca, if someone attacks you, or you catch someone trying to steal from you, you may wish to call the guards. Just type GUARDS and press the “Enter” key(a Macro can make this process even faster). Please note that in order to call the guards to attack a thief, it is not enough to simply suspect the thief, nor to notice something missing from your inventory. You must actually get a message from the game saying you detected the character trying to steal from you. Trammel, the PvP consent area, does not allow non-consensual PvP combat, except in special cases, such as organized guild wars. In the wilderness all over Britannia, most creatures you meet will be hostile and thus, there are two things to keep in mind the first time you venture out into the wilderness: 1. You are very likely to die. 2. This is OK. Death and Resurrection are just part of character development. You’re not seriously penalized for dying, and it’s not really difficult to get resurrected. Your skills do deteriorate at a faster rate while you’re dead, so it’s a good idea to get raised as soon as possible. But the worst thing about dying is that You Can’t Take It With You. All your hard-earned possessions will stay right where you fell, until someone or something comes along to claim them. For this reason it’s always a good idea to go adventuring with companions you can trust. If you fall, they can gather your stuff and either stay with it until you return from the Other Side or take it with them and return it to you when next you meet. If you want to go adventuring and there are no other players available at the moment, you can always train a pet or hire a mercenary. Either sort of companion will stay with your possessions and guard them while you’re dead.
Other Forms of Transportation Mounts are the cheapest, but do not allow overseas travel. Mounts can be purchased at the local stables or tamed in the wild. A variety of ship deeds are available from shipwrights, and basic models can also be purchased from provisioners. |
